A Guide to Fantasy Ball Womenswear

A fantasy ball is a chance to step into a world of magic and mystery, where elegance and imagination take center stage. Whether you’re attending a masquerade, a fae-inspired gathering, or a medieval-inspired courtly dance, the right attire can transport you to another realm. If you’re wondering how to create the magical feminine outfit for a fantasy ball, take a look at our resources and tips to make your night mystical.

1. Check the Event’s Pinterest Board & Inspiration

Many fantasy balls provide visual inspiration, often in the form of Pinterest boards or mood boards shared on social media. Before deciding on your outfit, take some time to explore these curated images. They’ll give you a sense of the aesthetic, colour palette, and level of formality expected at the event. Drawing inspiration from these resources ensures your outfit aligns with the event’s theme and helps you stand out for all the right reasons.

2. Master the Art of Layering

One of the most stunning aspects of fantasy fashion is its layering. Creating depth with different textures and materials adds an air of authenticity to your look. Consider incorporating:

Ballgowns

  • Think of this as the foundation of your outfit and the most essential piece. Gowns can vary in length and width, but ankle-length is generally expected as a minimum. We recommend choosing a flowy fabric to allow for movement and comfort while dancing. Some guests opt for a thigh slit for added mobility. If you’re considering a hoop skirt, be mindful of the venue’s size and capacity to ensure you have enough space.
  • Train length is another important factor—while long trains are stunning, they can easily get stepped on. To avoid this, consider a shorter train or a bustle hook.
  • When searching for dresses, try using keywords like bridesmaid dress or prom dress to find more options. Make sure to check reviews as many companies tend to steal images from others and provide a lower quality dress. Watch out for AI dresses too, as more and more fake gowns are popping up nowadays.
  • Below, you’ll find brand recommendations spanning a range of budgets (£30–£3,000). These are not listed in any particular order but are popular choices among guests:

Accesories

  • Consider layering with boleros, corsets, capes and cloaks as well as armour, arm cuffs and tights.  These outer layers can add a regal touch while also keeping you warm in cooler settings.

Jewellery and Adornments

  • Layering delicate chains, wings, rings, can help refine the overall aesthetic. A note in wings: If you choose wings, focus on those that are more slim so you don’t poke someone’s eye out! If you wear glasses, consider some intricate glasses chains.

3. Choose Shoes You Can Dance In

While dramatic footwear might seem appealing, remember that you’ll likely be standing, walking, and dancing for extended periods. Prioritise comfort and support by selecting shoes that balance style and practicality:

  • Block Heel, Wedges or Lower Heels: These provide stability without sacrificing elegance.
  • Embellished Flats: If you prefer not to wear heels, seek out embellished flats or ballet slippers to maintain the fairytale look.
  • Boots: For medieval, steampunk, or dark fantasy themes, knee-high boots or lace-up Victorian-style shoes are a stylish and comfortable option.

4. Don’t Forget Hair and Makeup

Your look isn’t complete without the right hair and makeup. Depending on the event’s theme, you might opt for:

  • Hairstyles and wigs: Loose curls, intricate braids, or elegant updos complement most fantasy-inspired looks. But if you don’t feel like doing your hair on ball day, opt for a wig.
  • Glowing or Mystical Makeup: Think shimmering highlighter, soft pastels, or even bold, dramatic eyeshadows with metallic or jewel tones.
  • Hair Accessories: Pearl pins, crowns, or delicate chains woven into your hair can enhance your enchanting appearance. Remember to consider the weight of your crown when putting your look together, could you wear that crown for 6+ hours straight?

5. Carry a Reticule or Pouch

Instead of a modern handbag, opt for a vintage-style purse, drawstring pouch, or an intricately beaded clutch that fits the aesthetic of your outfit. These will allow you to carry essentials like your phone, a fan, and wallet while also being able to dance. If you are attending a nature-themed event, consider a small basket!

6. Get Thrifty & DIY

Tight on budget? No problem! Plenty of our guests have managed to source their fantasy ball outfits through other avenues.

  • Buy a second-hand dress: Try Vinted, Depop or Facebook marketplace to search for items. Keywords including ‘coquette’, ‘dark academia’, ‘cottagecore’, ‘fairycore’, ‘fantasy’, ‘royaltycore’ and ‘medieval’ may yield results. Head to charity shops near prom season to also find great dress options.
  • Sew or alter a dress: Fancy yourself talented with a needle and thread? Why not sew a dress! And if you are hoping to save money on fabric, search for it at charity shops. Alternatively, try altering a gown you already have. We have seen some guests purchase old wedding dresses and dye them to their preferred colour.
  • Rent a dress: Brands like Fantasy Garms allow guests to borrow a beautiful dress for the evening at a lower cost.

7. Celebrate your Culture

If you come from a cultural background that has a unique cultural garb which you would like to represent, you are more than welcome! This is a wonderful way to showcase your heritage while also immersing yourself in the environment. We have seen Chinese, Indian and Slavic dresses represented at previous events. If you are looking to dress in the style of another minority culture, please ensure that you have cultural sensitivity and ensure that participants from other cultures are comfortable with you wearing their items (I.e. wearing a Hanfu, lehenga or kimono).
